SUMMARY

Paragon Professional Services, LLC

, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation is currently seeking a qualified Environmental Scientist/Engineer/Geologist to work from our Anchorage, AK office on environmental investigation, characterization and remediation projects.  The qualified candidate should be motivated and hardworking with experience dealing with the many aspects of contaminated sites including soil, groundwater, sediment, air, and surface water. Primary duties will include providing data analysis, research, and technical consultation; preparing planning documents; and supporting field activities on environmental investigation and remediation projects at sites primarily in Alaska.

Safely execute all job duties  

Collect and interpret field data

Prepare project submittals, including work plans and reports in accordance with Federal and State of Alaska regulations, including CERCLA

Plan and perform environmental investigations and removal actions

Evaluate remedial and restoration alternatives

Perform subcontractor oversight

Perform junior staff oversight

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or Environmental Science related field

Master’s Degree in related field preferred

Current 40 Hour HAZWOPER or 8 Hour Refresher

Meet criteria for ADEC Qualified Environmental Professional (18 AAC 75 333)

Minimum five (5) years of experience in environmental investigation and remediation activities including environmental sample collection and management and reporting in Alaska

Experience working with Federal and state agencies and local stakeholders on environmental projects including the Alaska environmental regulatory environment

Familiarity with technical data analysis and contamination delineation techniques

Experience logging environmental borings and collecting soil samples obtained from drilling rigs

Experience installing, developing, sampling, and decommissioning monitoring wells

Availability to engage in extended field work periods away from the home office.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Experience and expertise with executing environmental remediation contracts

Experience investigating contaminated sites

Working knowledge of Federal, State of Alaska, and local laws, regulations, and guidance

Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and strong attention to detail

Ability to manage and perform simultaneous or subsequent cleanup activities at multiple remote Alaska locations throughout the year

Knowledge and successful implementation of the CERCLA process, including but not limited to preparation of preliminary assessments and site inspections, feasibility studies, risk assessments, remedial investigations, proposed plans, records of decision, and CERCLA five-year reviews

Ability to find solutions to the unique logistical and environmental challenges facing Alaska-based projects

Ability to function as field lead for soil and groundwater sampling tasks, and preparing boring logs

Ability to perform quality control functions during site work

Ability and willingness to travel to remote Alaska sites in light aircraft or watercraft

Strong work plan and report writing capability

Ability to perform in varying weather conditions

Experience and facility using with MS Office Suite (especially Excel)

Preferred

Experience using ADEC’s Hydrocarbon Risk Calculator preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Employee must maintain a constant state of mental alertness at all times. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The ability to work outside the office environment for extended periods involving exposure to the elements with weather that will include extreme heat, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, climbing, stooping, bending, and routine lifting of up to 50 pounds.

The ability to properly use personnel protective equipment (PPE) including the required use at all times of hard hats, steel toed boots, eye protection, and hearing protection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

Work is performed in both the office and outdoor settings. Indoor work includes work plan development, reporting, and other activities.  Outdoor work includes field activities such as investigations, sampling, treatability/pilot studies, remediation, inspections, and long-term management/monitoring.

Field work may be performed at project sites with environmental media (e.g., soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, etc.) that has been impacted with hazardous substances and/or hazardous wastes. Field work also usually involves the use of heavy equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud at times when operating equipment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.
