The Interpretation Engineering department is seeking applicants for a nuclear physicist position in the domain of nuclear physics and computational modeling. Nuclear measurements are among the most important technologies for characterization of the Earth’s subsurface. Building on many decades of expertise, Schlumberger develops the hardware and algorithms that deliver in-situ measurements deep underground and provide answers for the ongoing energy transition.
As a member of our multidisciplinary team, you will have a key role in developing and implementing new models and integrated algorithms that use fundamental science to solve real-world problems. You will provide the physical understanding and computing skills to take advantage of nuclear measurements within datasets that span diverse spatial scales and sensing techniques. Our projects serve the technical challenges and market needs for oil and gas development and the emerging sectors of decarbonization and the energy transition, including Carbon Capture and Storage and subsurface characterization for renewables. Scientists are encouraged to publish results, present work at conferences, and file for patent protection.
Scientists in the IE department combine expertise in the fields of nuclear, acoustics, EM, and geophysical measurements, along with state-of-the-art computational sciences and deep learning. Extensive datasets and computing infrastructure are available on the premises and in the cloud.
Roles & Responsibilities
Develop solutions based on the principles of physics and mathematical models.
Build virtual and real prototypes, products, and systems suitable for testing.
Design testing procedures and coordinate tests, and document results.
Analyze laboratory data from nuclear logging tools.
Perform nuclear modeling to simulate the response of nuclear logging tools and use laboratory measurment data to benchmark the modeling data.
Analyze modeling and laboratory data to develop borehole correction and petrophysical interpretation algorithms for nuclear logging tools.
Participate to the scoping of new interpretation products: contribute to the definition of algorithms, workflows and software requirements. Evaluate feasibility of new or improved interpretation methods, algorithms and products. Participate in the specification of the corresponding software products.
Specify, develop, validate and maintain interpretation methods, algorithms, workflows and products as per project plan and technical objectives. Build prototypes, products and systems suitable to validate the applicability, robustness and performance of given interpretation methods, algorithms, workflows and products. Participate in the implementation, testing and sustaining of the corresponding commercial software.
Conduct technical reviews of project requirements, specifications and risk analysis.
Assist in commercialization tasks where applicable.
Contribute to design standards.
Create and maintain product documentation.
Make presentations to technical, management, and client audiences.as needed.
Author technical reports, papers, articles and patents.
Share expertise via internal knowledge sharing methods and special interest groups. Build informal networks throughout the organization and with customers.
Assign, direct and review the work of technicians and junior engineers. Mentor junior team members as required.
Provide training and support to customers and field representatives.
Maintain familiarity with company technology, organization and business
Keep abreast of novel technical concepts and markets; Learn new skills and practices as required to develop products that maintain Schlumberger's technical leadership.
Participate in recruiting activities.
Detailed Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or related fields, with courses and preferably thesis work related to modeling and analysis of nuclear data.
Strong interest in physical simulations and interpretation of data. You thrive on the combination of science and computing to extract insights.
Fluency with programming languages such as Python, Matlab, or similar. C knowledge is desirable.
Strong working knowledge of applied mathematics.
Knowledge and experience in Petrophysics and/or Geophysics of the Oil & Gas industry is a plus.
Knowledge of sensor/detector technologies, data science, statistical analysis, machine learning, and cloud computing is highly desirable.
Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. You are enthusiastic and work well in a team of scientists and engineers.
Candidates must be able to legally work and reside in the US.
Candidates must have 3 years minimum work experience.
