Profile

Position Title: Scientist, Protein Sciences

Reports to: Jill Carton

Company Background:

Century Therapeutics is developing novel allogeneic living cell products for oncology that overcome the limitations of current cell therapies. Century's genetically-engineered, universal iPSC-derived immune effector cell products are designed to specifically target hematologic and solid tumor cancers. Our commitment to developing off-the-shelf cell therapies will expand patient access and provide an unparalleled opportunity to advance the course of cancer care.

Century's foundational technology is built on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that have unlimited self-renewing capacity. This enables complex cellular engineering to produce controlled cell banks of modified cells that can be expanded and differentiated into desired immune effector cells, which can supply vast amounts of allogeneic, homogeneous therapeutic products. This platform differentiates Century from other approaches that utilize non-renewable donor-derived cells.

This position (TBDA8) is based in the Greater Philadelphia region.

Role:

Century Therapeutics is seeking an innovative and highly motivated Scientist with a background in protein design and protein biochemistry to join the Advanced Technologies Group at our research site in Philadelphia, PA. This candidate will be responsible for helping to design and test novel therapeutic proteins such as chimeric antigen receptors, bispecific engagers, and engineered cytokines. They will work collaboratively with scientists in protein sciences, synthetic biology, and cancer biology, to improve the efficacy of Century's cellular therapies through protein structure optimization as well as developing novel proteins to alter the tumor microenvironment or engage endogenous immune effectors. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, self-motivated individual with a strong lab background that will stay up-to-date with relevant techniques and have a genuine passion for cutting-edge cell therapy research and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, engineer, and test chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), bispecific engagers, and other therapeutic proteins.
  • Contribute to characterization of novel protein designs through expertise in biochemistry, and molecular and cellular biology.
  • Serve as a key functional liaison on a cross-functional team.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently propose, design, and execute projects.
  • Data analysis, documentation, and communication of results to team members and the broader Research organization.
  • Participation in an interactive, team-oriented culture.

Qualifications:
  • PhD in biological sciences with 1-4 years of experience or BS/MS with 10-15 years of experience.
  • Extensive experience in protein design and protein biochemistry.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, and cell-based screening assays.
  • Experience with molecular cloning techniques (ligation, Gibson, Golden Gate assembly, etc.)
  • Deep and broad understanding of molecular and cellular biology.
  • Knowledge or experience with immunology and immune assays a plus.
  • Knowledge of cellular therapies, in particular CAR T and CAR NK, a plus.

Requirements:
  • Experience with protein design and characterization.
  • Mastery of molecular biology include molecular design and advanced cloning methods.
  • Strong and broad expertise in mammalian cell culture and cell assays.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and ability to prioritize based on timelines.
  • Open-minded, curious and risk-tolerant; humble and not afraid to push and be challenged.
  • High scientific integrity, committed to ethics and scientific rigor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for data sharing to a broad range of audiences, both internal and external.
  • Passion for innovation and drug development.
